with Staci Haines and Richard Strozzi-Heckler

Welcome.

Declarations are how words change lives.

A somatic Declaration is your embodied commitment to a life-affirming future. It is a clear statement you make about a vision, a meaningful desire, or even a longing you have.

To declare a new future, you imagine and speak your declaration, and then take action. Somatic awareness, practices and openings are all crucial the process of transformation.

We are very pleased to present to you an all-new online somatics program: Declaring a New Future. We designed this course to help you build your somatic capacity to fulfill your desired future.

Strozzi Institute Founder Richard Strozzi-Heckler and Senior Teacher Staci K. Haines co-lead this foundational training in the art of embodied transformation. In their six, self-paced video modules, you will:

⮞ Write your declaration, and chart a clear path for it to be more than just another good intention

⮞ Learn the 3 pillars of Strozzi Somatics and how they relate so you can embody your declaration

⮞ Access your embodied imagination to feel what you deeply care about

⮞ Discern the difference between your inherited ideas about what’s important and your yearnings

⮞ Learn to stay connected to you vision and declaration even amidst rapid changes

⮞ Finally understand the how of change, from the deepest embodied perspective

This work will surprise you.

You will know you’ve succeeded when you find yourself under the same old pressures, and somehow, you can choose to respond differently than ever before.

This is your invitation to stop running on empty. To be accountable to your higher purpose. To get feeling again, and reclaim the choices, possibilities, and future that await you, all aligned with your deepest values.

You are powerful, worthy, and needed.

Richard Strozzi-Heckler &
Team Strozzi

Somatics asks,

“What are you practicing right now, in your body, in this moment?

…and is it aligned with what really matters to you?

I am a commitment to...

In Strozzi Somatics, our declarations begin, “I am a commitment to…” in order to activate our embodied sense of identity with the future we are declaring into being. For example:

I am a commitment to finish writing my book by the end of the year

I am a commitment to leading my community through the crisis we are facing

I am a commitment to being fully myself and becoming more present in my life

I am a commitment to align with my higher purpose and inner truth and to stand for that every day, even in the face of adversity

Supporting your Declaration with the three pillars of Strozzi somatics—awareness, practices and openings—is the surest way to create the future you long for in the way most aligned with your values.

The Heart of Embodied Transformation:

More Choices, New Habits

What is deeply embodied makes our decisions, often unconsciously. We all have automatic reactions that come out under pressure that were formed through our life experiences.

With practice, we can open up the space around those reactions to feel the different ways we can choose to respond.

Choice follows awareness.

Eventually, new choices lead to new action. And when we practice those new actions, we build new habits right into our muscle tissue.

Practice builds habits.

Embodied transformation aligns our habits with our values. Because unfortunately, most of us inadvertently embody values or social norms we don’t believe in…and often don’t embody the values we do believe in.

From a somatic vantage point, this is completely understandable—and there is a lot we can do about it. In Declaring a New Future, you will learn how this works and how you can uproot and transform habits that no longer serve you.

The Three Pillars of Strozzi Somatics:
Awareness, Practices, and Openings

Somatic Awareness

Somatic awareness grows more choice in our responses and actions. With real-time information from your soma, you can be more skillful. Somatic awareness often re-introduces us to what we most care about, and helps us craft the declarations that will bring us into a new future.

Somatic Practices

Somatic practices build new skills that are relevant to what we care about. When a new competency is developed somatically, it becomes more than just a good idea. It can become a natural action or habit at the level of muscle memory. Somatic practices allow us to build a “new shape” aligned with our values and politics. This is essential to fulfilling a declaration.

Somatic Openings

Somatic openings allow us to listen to and transform our conditioned tendencies. They occur when we access our automatic reactions to stress. Our bodies tell stories; our muscles hold memories. Somatic openings let us rewrite those embodied narratives, thus opening us to a new future.

When you make a declaration supported by these three pillars, understood in your social context, that declaration will change lives.

Meet Your Presenters

Staci K. Haines

Staci K. Haines is a national leader in the field of Somatics, specializing in intersecting personal and social change. She is a senior teacher at Strozzi Institute and the Director of Methodology, having studied and worked with Strozzi Institute since 1995.

Staci is the co-founder of generative somatics, a multiracial social justice organization bringing somatics to social and environmental justice leaders, organizations, and alliances. She is also the originator of Somatics and Trauma, and leads courses teaching psychologists, social change leaders, and other practitioners to effectively transform the impact of individual and social trauma and violence.

Staci is the author of The Politics of Trauma: Somatics, Healing and Social Justice (North Atlantic Press 2019) and Healing Sex: A Mind Body Approach to Healing Sexual Trauma (Cleis 1999, 2007). Healing Sex has been nationally recognized and translated into German, Japanese and Spanish. She also released the video Healing Sex (SIR Productions 2004). Lastly, Staci is the founder of generationFIVE, a community leadership organization whose mission is to end the sexual abuse of children within five generations.

Iman Boundaoui

Iman Nacer Boundaoui is a somatic practitioner and facilitator with a deep commitment to working with individuals and communities to heal and transform collective, intergenerational and politicized trauma. As a practitioner, she grounds in her indigenous North African cultural and spiritual wisdom lineages, and draws from traditional African-Sufi healing and embodiment practices, which she resources from in her own life and healing.

Iman is also an attorney and has practiced as a social-impact litigator, civil rights litigator and immigrant rights activist and organizer, working with individuals, communities and social justice organizations to curb the impact of state-sponsored discrimination and corrosive profit-driven corporate behavior and policy.

Her experiences working with law and policy to defend human life and dignity led Iman to seek out alternative pathways to working with individuals and communities in their fight for safety, dignity and belonging. After a few years of training with the Strozzi Institute as a practitioner, she is now a teacher at SI, where she continues the fight for wholeness and justice that she began years ago as a lawyer. When she’s not reading, writing, thinking about, or facilitating embodied transformation and healing work, you can find her hiking and foraging for wild herbs in the Santa Cruz mountains, a place she currently calls home that closely resembles her ancestral homeland in the Atlas Mountains.

He has spent over five decades researching, developing, and teaching Somatics to organizational leaders, coaches, executive leadership teams, start-ups, military, and governmental agencies.

He was named one of the Top 50 Executive Coaches in The Art and Practice of Leadership Coaching, and in Profiles in Coaching. Frequently asked questions:

We get it. It sounds rather strange to offer an embodiment course in a non-physical space. However, the pandemic taught us that virtual workshops are actually very effective! And they make courses like this more accessible to a diverse, global audience.

Embodiment work is a practice. Just like you wouldn’t go to one yoga class and be “done,” you keep going to practice, gain insights, and learn more techniques. Richard always starts his martial arts classes with the very first move he learned in Aikido. Students get to see that they’ve changed, and also the way it was presented before has changed. We are always evolving.

The soma is the doorway for sustainable transformation. Mental or informational learning tends to only change insight, and can be a form of spiritual bypass. Embodied practices lead to deep change in the self in the form of new actions you can take in alignment with your values, new choices available to you that you didn’t know were there, and the embodied synthesis of language, spirit, and body.

We acknowledge that leaning into change is scary, and it is hard to leave old ways of being behind. However, if you are asking this question, that is a sign that deep down you know that change is necessary. Waiting will only prolong the work you know you need to do. The best place to begin is within a supportive community. Start with getting guidance on your declaration, and then discover the small steps you can take to begin your transformation. Getting going is easier than you think!

Somatics helps you deal with the instability and rapid changes happening around us by giving you more resource to face it all. The world needs you — the best version of you — for these times. This course will help you clarify your purpose in the midst of confusion, focus on meaningful action to conserve your energy, and create knowing, grounding, and centering within for more peace.

Absolutely not. This course is for people just starting to clarify their purpose, as well as people who have been on their path for decades. We all learn from each other. The fact is, the global forces of dis-embodiment—the click-bait news machine, your stress at work, rising political tensions, systemic injustices—just to name a few are all trying to keep you from declaring your new future by pressuring you to conform and keep numb. We are here to advocate for you being in your body more. If you are attracted to an embodied way of being and want to follow it, here is the perfect place to begin.
