History

Strozzi Institute is the creator of embodied leadership
and the original somatic training institute.

With 45 years of development and experience, we have fine-tuned a unique and powerful methodology that produces sustained change, reliably. SI Somatics teaches the “how” in actualizing the best leadership and coaching ideas, theories and intentions – not just for individuals, but for coaches, teams and companies around the world.

GO DEEPER.

Origins of the methodology
The genesis of Strozzi Institute began in the late 1960’s. While earning his PhD in psychology, founder Richard Strozzi-Heckler became intrigued by the psychology of individual and team mastery – a subject already part of his own experience as a competitive athlete and martial artist.

Richard studied with many teachers to look at the most effective ways to produce holistic change: change that engaged meaning, intellect, emotion and body; and produced new actions and competencies. He partnered and studied with many innovators of the time including: Dr. Randolph Stone, Magda Proskauer, Doris Breyer, George Leonard, Li Li Tau, Thomas Hanna, Saotome Sensei and Charan Singh.

In 1970, Richard founded Lomi School with Dr. Robert K. Hall, Alyssa Hall, and Catherine Flaxman. Using his research on holistic change, Lomi worked to further personal excellence, transformative change, leadership and team building among therapists, psychiatrists, counselors and other health professionals.

During this time, Richard was also deepening his own personal proficiency through the martial art of Aikido, earning a 6th degree black belt. By integrating Aikido and bodywork principles with his leadership and holistic change work, an integrative and innovative field developed that we now call “Somatics” – the unity of language, action, feeling and meaning. Somatics is based on the understanding that the mind, the body, the self and our rationality are inextricably linked; to develop one, you must cultivate the others. Modern neuroscience is now offering the psycho-biological grounding for this work. Between 1970 and 1985, the Lomi School developed into the premier training ground for this pragmatic somatic methodology.

In the mid-1980’s, the Army Special Forces engaged Richard in a classified project to increase the Green Beret’s capacity for physical and mental enhancements, as well as team cohesion. The outcomes of the training showed a 56 to 100 percent increase in mental, emotional, physical and team capacity, with a marked increase in leadership ability from all participants.

Strozzi Institute: the early years
Realizing the leadership possibilities inherent in the discourse of Somatics, Strozzi Institute was founded in 1985 to serve leaders, coaches and organizations. Strozzi Institute spent the last two decades furthering Embodied Leadership with leaders globally, working within Fortune 500 companies, start-ups and social enterprises; certifying Somatic Coaches and Master Coaches; and integrating somatic bodywork.

Shortly after the institute’s creation, Richard Strozzi-Heckler began a decade-long collaboration with Fernando Flores, PhD, to combine the business application of Fernando’s linguistic distinctions and Strozzi’s somatic distinctions. Since that collaboration, Strozzi Institute has incorporated the embodiment of linguistic business processes as part of the somatic work. The continual refinement and evolution of Strozzi Institute’s somatic practices is the grounding for Strozzi Institute’s leadership and organizational work.

In 1999, Strozzi Institute launched the first Somatic Coach Certification program, and have led the field ever since. Somatic Coaching integrates holistic theory, language for action, embodied practices and somatic bodywork to create meaningful and effective change in clients. While many coaching schools are exploring a “body-based component” to their coach training, Strozzi Institute remains the only coach certification program in Somatic Coaching, offering clear theory, somatic change processes and holistic practices.

In the last decade, we’ve seen Somatics begin to hit its stride, validated by modern neuroscience and the deepening study of trauma and resilience through the medical and therapeutic fields. To read more about the neuroscience undergirding Somatics check out our reading list.

Today: SI in a (post)modern world
In 2012, with the leadership of Staci K. Haines, Strozzi Institute took a new look at the world and at the possibility of making a greater difference. Today, our commitment is to develop transformative leaders and organizations that can meet the challenges and hopes of our times – leaving our communities and world more vital than we found it.

As each generation does, we are integrating the commitments and concerns of our times. SI recently incorporated as a Benefit Corporation – a new corporate structure that measures a triple bottom line: People + Planet + Profit. While these values have always been a part of SI, becoming a Benefit Corporation allows SI to express this commitment through our business structure. We are also including Sustainable Business as one of our key areas of focus.

In 2012, Strozzi Institute also formed a for-profit/non-profit partnership with generative somatics (gs). This partnership allowed SI to more powerfully enact our ethics of social equity and environmental sustainability, and support embodied leadership in wider and more diverse circles. While we decided to complete our formal organizational partnership in 2016, we remain in strong relationship with gs and committed to the widespread use of Somatics for social benefit.

Today, Strozzi Institute offers individual, team and organizational development through a unique embodied leadership methodology. We support leaders and teams in creating compelling futures, meaningful engagement and the ability to take effective action. SI runs the leading Somatic Coaching program globally, certifying thousands of coaches, master coaches and trainers. SI also holds powerful personal transformation courses for individuals, groups and communities.

Methodology

We propose a different approach to learning - embodied learning.

In a world of continuous change and constant social innovation, learning has taken on new meaning. While it was once sufficient to be competent at the same job over a lifetime, we are now required to continually learn new skills, to partner with people of widely different backgrounds and to be flexible enough to change roles, job positions and organizational directions, quickly and skillfully.

The conversation is no longer about learning over the course of our career – it is about learning over the course of our lifetime… Learning how to learn, so that we can adapt, change, take new actions and become more whole.

All learning in Strozzi Institute programs is based in embodied learning. Our unique approach combines the latest in neuroscience, holistic practice, action-oriented communication and mindfulness. Through this methodology, we help people, teams and organizations learn to take new actions – ones they weren’t previously able to take, that are aligned with what they care about. We define transformation as the ability to take new actions, aligned with your vision and your values, even under the same old pressures. Embodied learning creates transformation.

More on SI Methodology

Our inherited way of learning: The Rationalistic Tradition

We are almost all trained in the rationalistic tradition of learning: meaning, we think of learning as something that happens uniquely with our mind – thinking, memorizing and analyzing.

Under the Rationalistic Tradition, we are compelled to read books and listen to lectures about theories for acting in the world. We value theoretical knowledge. In this model, we say someone has learned something if they can understand and analyze data. This person, we would then say, is smart because they can prove what they say is true by pointing to outside facts, articles and research. As our world grows, and grows rapidly, we see that these skills are both arguably essential and incomplete in the realm of leadership and business.

What about the body, our actions our presence?

What’s missing is an understanding about the body: specifically, that our bodies and ourselves are one in the same – this is our whole self.

The Rationalistic Tradition has taught us the misperception and objectification of the body as a “vehicle for transporting our minds,” or “the object we need to dress, exercise, feed, make healthy and attractive.” The body is an after-thought, if it is considered at all.

At SI, we see something different: our bodies are inextricably linked to the self. We learn, relate, act and think through the body. We become highly adaptive, intelligent, perceptive and aware through the body. Our incredible brains are an organ of our complex body.

So, if we bring our whole selves into the conversation of learning, we can then begin to explore embodiment: both our inherited, learned habits (that may or may not be working anymore) and new ways of acting, thinking and relating that are aligned with what we most care about.

What habits of action and thought do we learn as a result of our experiences and adaptations over time, and how does this affect how we show up in the world? How often have we witnessed the inconsistency of someone who wants to change, but cannot take the new desired action? Learning does not happen by will or thinking alone… It is largely contingent on our ability to take new actions. Habits and new actions are learned through purposeful practice. Practice creates embodiment. Embodiment allows us to act, think and feel in new ways, consistently.

Whatever we do as human beings, we do through our bodies. The sum total of our history – experiences, reactions, survival strategies, relationships, successes, failures and more – lives in our bodies. Our experiences shape our habits, beliefs, reactions under pressure, strengths, resilience, actions and non-actions. And as a result, how we choose to act today is largely a response and adaptation to conditioning from our history. There is nothing wrong with this – it is just how we work.

Knowing this, we can go about learning, changing and growing in a different way.

Consider this example: a manager who is evaluated by his team as not fulfilling on his promises decides to learn about keeping commitments. He reads the latest books on commitment, becomes intellectually knowledgeable on the subject, and can speak convincingly about it. Yet, his actions don’t change. His way of being and relating to promises doesn’t change. Despite his knowledge and understanding, he continues to find himself falling short on his commitments. Trust in him decreases. People continue to think of him as someone who has not learned how to keep commitments. What is missing for him is a set of distinctions and practices that will allow him to change his actions and habits, so that he can act consistently with his desire to keep his commitments.

If we can take new actions, perform in new ways, show an increased capacity for relating and presence, we will be seen as someone who has learned something new. As we embody change, people’s view of us changes, too. The converse is also true: if we don’t act in a new way, we will be assessed as not learning. Or worse, that our words and actions don’t line up.

The new path of learning: Embodied Learning

Embodied Learning is the ability to take actions that were previously unavailable to us, even when we are under pressure.

Through this approach, we teach the whole self (our thinking, our bodies, our emotions and our relating) to “embody” new competencies, build leadership presence, and – arguably the biggest reward – take new actions aligned with what is important to us, sustainably, over time. Just like it would be extremely difficult to unlearn driving a car or playing the piano, what is transformed through embodied learning permanently becomes part of who we are.

At Strozzi Institute we ask, “What do you embody, and is it aligned with what you most care about?” Then we role up our sleeves and begin to practice.

A call to action.

We are now at a historical transition where it is crucial to place learning in the context of action: as a way of being in the world, instead of being only intellectually smart. Imagine if our ability to coordinate with others and ourselves was enhanced so much, that we could effortlessly produce a future that takes care of our concerns and desires. That is the future through Embodied Learning.
